INFECTIOUS DISEASES FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Garden State Infectious Diseases Associates, PA administers a two year Infectious Diseases Fellowship in conjuction with The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- School of Osteopathic Medicine and Kennedy University Hospital.
The Infectious Disease Fellowship is designed to train the prospective resident in all aspects of Infectious Diseases. The program emphasis is on clinical training, however there is opportunity to develop skills in clinical research. The Infectious Disease Fellowship is multi-disciplined in the approach to disease process. The program develops leadership skills and prepares the candidate to develop and oversee an infectious disease program.
FELLOWSHIP CURRICULUM
Didactic and Clinical Training
The fellows are closely supervised in all aspects of the program. The fellows will meet with the attending physicians weekly to review aspects of infectious diseases. The fellows in the hospital will do the consults assigned to him or her and then the consult will be reviewed and critiqued in a constructive way to help the fellow enhance his or her knowledge. The fellows will participate in Grand Rounds that pertain to infectious diseases. When in the ambulatory setting the fellows will always have attending supervision by one of the members of the division. The fellows are encouraged to carry out a research project pertaining to an aspect of infectious diseases that is interesting to them. The fellows are expected to produce a publishable quality paper on an aspect of Infectious Diseases. The research project or paper is to be submitted to the ACOI by February 1 of their second year of fellowship.
The fellowship begins with one month of clinical microbiology in the laboratory at Kennedy University Hospital. During the remainder of the year, the fellow rotates through clinical rotations. The second year continues with clinical rotations and additional months to emphasize research, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, and Transplant Infectious Diseases. They also participate in monthly journal clubs and a weekly review of Principles and Practices of Infectious Diseases edited by Mandell et al.
